The World Heath Organization (WHO) said recently that gonorrhea, a sexually transmitted disease, could soon become untreatable. Infecting millions of people each year, gonorrhea has been developing resistance against every medication used to treat it. Even cephalosporins, a group of antibiotics considered “the last line of treatment”, are proving to be ineffective in more and more places around the world. WHO wants countries to tighten their rules for antibiotic use, improve surveillance of the disease to learn the full extent of the problem, and provide better sex education.
