Can divorce run in the family?

Divorce felt like a family habit to writer Terry K. Carr. Her father was on his third marriage, her half-brother was poised to divorce his third wife (for the second time), and her mother was living alone after three divorces. Carr’s own divorce left her worried about continuing her family’s track record. The way we are raised by our families provides us with certain expectations around love and marriage, and the framework we grow up with isn't always the best. Carr is happy with her decision to keep herself from going through another divorce by never getting remarried. Love isn’t over for her, she says, but marriage just isn’t for everyone.
