In Living Well, Despite Catchin’ Hell Melody T. McCloud, shares medical “pearls of wisdom” used by physicians in caring for patients that readers can use to improve their interpersonal relationships. One of these pearls is “Don’t Leave the Tourniquet on Longer Than Necessary.” The tourniquet metaphor refers to the behaviors in which women sometimes engage to punish men, like withholding sex. Like a tourniquet constricting blood, this cuts off communication and intimacy, and if this behavior continues too long, the relationship will founder, just as leaving a tourniquet on too long can cause serious damage to a limb.
